Privateering papers, 1718-1928 (inclusive), 1779-1814 (bulk).

Contains correspondence, logbooks, accounts and account books, legal documents, cargo manifests, prize inventories, lists of prisoners, printed material, and clippings pertaining to privateering especially during the War of 1812, but also during the American Revolution and later wars. Most of the schooners and brigs involved originated from Massachusetts or New Hampshire. Includes letter of marque, 1779, from the State of Massachusetts Bay to the owners, captain, officers, seamen and mariners of the Boston ship, Revenge, which was headed to the West Indies; a journal, 1814, of the private armed schooner, York, of Boston; and accounts of the prizes captured in 1814 by the schooner, Fox. Also contains correspondence of a naval agent in Portsmouth, N.H., and of a marshal in Maine, records of a Maine court, and a list of British subjects in Lincoln County in 1812.
